Thomas Venner & Lucy Gardner Family - Marriage Certificate (1859)

Thomas was illiterate and his "mark" was entered on the certificate. This level of literacy was not abnormal during this period in England's history. Education was not "free" until 1870 and the wages of children were an important part of the family budget. By 1851, when Thomas was 13, only 10% of the children attended school - more in London but much less in the countryside. Note Lucy is considered a "spinster" at 17 years of age.

Citation: Venner-Gardner marriage, 7 Mar 1859, St. Luke's Church, St. luke's Parish, Southampton County, England. Certified copy issued 22 Apr 1964 by General Register Office, Somerset House, London (Application #427311); inherited and held in 2006 by DV Freeman (Benton County, WA)
