The Emporium Hat Store - New Orleans, LA

The Emporium Hat Store, situated at Poydras and Camp Streets, but a few blocks west of the Mississippi, was owned and operated by D.C. Johnston during the year 1860 as evidenced by the 1860 New Orleans Census where a D.C. Johnston is listed as a "Hatter." His wife's name is Isadora. Clearly, this D.C. Johnston is not our great great grandfather.

The available evidence identifies this individual as the nephew of our D.C. Johnston. Why would the family papers include this flyer if D.C. Johnston had not made it for his namesake nephew? Another link is this same 1860 census that identifies a new-born son, William P. Johnston, obviously named after the boy's grandfather, D.C. Johnston's brother. The New Orleans 1870 census provides further evidence since David C. Johnston and wife Isadora have four more children including a son named David C. Johnston born 1867.

The Johnston family is in Louisiana because D.C. Johnston's brother William moved there in the 1830s to work for New Orleans' Picayune Newspaper - still in business as the Times-Picayune after 170 years.
