  • Name David Claypoole JOHNSTON, I
    • The Johnston and Claypoole families were close friends in Philadelphia. David Claypoole Johnston (b. 1798) was named after David C. Claypoole who printed the first copies of the U.S. Constitution. DC Johnston's younger sister Margaret Claypoole Johnston (b. 1810) was named after Margaret (Britton) Claypoole the 3rd wife of David C. Claypoole who died before 1804 (when David married for a 4th time).

DC Johnston was an uncle to three generations of David Claypoole Johnstons in Louisiana: DCJ II (1837-1874), DCJ III (1866-1946), & DCJ IV (1896-1979)

FLASH: NEW INFORMATION ON JOHNSTON DESCENDANTS

The Emporium Hat Store, situated at Poydras and Camp Streets, but a few blocks west of the Mississippi, was owned and operated by D.C. Johnston during the year 1860 as evidenced by the 1860 New Orleans Census where a D.C. Johnston is listed as a "Hatter." His wife's name is Isadora. Clearly, this D.C. Johnston is not our great great grandfather.

The available evidence identifies this individual as the nephew of our D.C. Johnston. Why would the family papers include this flyer if D.C. Johnston had not made it for his namesake nephew? Another link is this same 1860 census that identifies a new-born son, William P. Johnston, obviously named after the boy's grandfather, D.C. Johnston's brother. The New Orleans 1870 census provides further evidence since David C. Johnston and wife Isadora have four more children including a son named David C. Johnston born 1867.

The Johnston family is in Louisiana because D.C. Johnston's brother William moved there in the 1830s to work for New Orleans' Picayune Newspaper - still in business as the Times-Picayune after 170 years.

    Obituary: David Claypoole Johnston 1798-1865
D.C. Johnston died in November 1865 at the age of 68 and 8 months His date of birth is, therefore, March 1798 not 1797 as stated. The March 1798 date of birth is also validated by the fact that he was the first child of parents married in April 1797. David Claypoole Johnston was named after his father's employer and friend David Claypoole.
