Forest Hills Cemetery, consecrated in 1848 and one of America's most lovely rural garden cemeteries, has been designated an historic landmark by the National Register of Historic Places. It is a unique Boston cultural resource and historic site with its 250 acres offering the public a magnificent arboretum, open air museum, and tranquil sanctuary just minutes from downtown Boston. The Cartwright catacomb tomb, pictured here, was built by Charles W. Cartwright (1790-1873) in 1867 and is the first of its kind constructed at Forest Hills.

As the designated representative for the Cartwright catacomb tomb, I have met with the Chairman of the Forest Hills Cemetery Association to discuss much needed renovations. The 19 crypts inside are mounted in a brownstone frame that is deteriorating slowly. As the brownstone absorbs moisture, it swells, flakes off, and the frame releases the marble crypt faces to drop onto the floor and break I have seen some of our ancestors up close and personal. We have finally agreed on the scope of a project that will correct the problems and extend the tomb's life another 100 years or so. However, Forest Hills is only responsible for one third of the restoration costs.

Note the number of our Roots & Relatives that repose in final silence in this lovely setting.
