John W. & Mary (Johnston) Cartwright Home - Revere, MA
John W. Cartwright and his wife Mary P. (Johnston) Cartwright moved into this Florence Avenue home overlooking the harbor about 1872. There were more children and John had recently been elected president of one of Boston's larger insurance companies. The purchase date is based on the fact that John would not have been in a position to buy the property after his insurance company went bankrupt as a result of the great Boston fire of November 1872.

It was still owned by the John (now a widower) in 1878 when a plot plan of the North Shore Land Company property identified this site as "Lot 56 - not available for sale" and handwritten notes on the plan identify John Cartwright as the owner. Lot 56 is about where 70 Florence Street is currently located.

It was sold about 1879 due to John's financial misfortunes and the untimely death of his wife Mary in 1878. The children were "farmed out" to relatives about this time.

Note the large connected barn to the left and the well and pitcher pump in the foreground likely used when horses were grazed in the field.

Cartwright/Johnston - Casual Sunday in Revere
The Cartwright homestead in Revere was a favorite gathering place for the neighborhood teenagers. Note the telescope for watching the boats in the harbor. John's daughter Mary Elizabeth (1869-1947) tells of sighting her older brother David (1862-1926) sailing back into the harbor (towing a dinghy) and shouting out, "Everybody look. Here comes David with his tender behind." Needless to say, young Mary was mortified when the entire group broke out laughing.

Cartwright Homestead Revere Harbor View (ca. 1875)
This view of the Revere harbor is from the third floor of the Cartwright home on Florence Avenue. The large waterfront hotel at the foot of Shirley Avenue is likely the Hotel Vue DeLeau (previously known as the Pavillion and the Strathmore). It was located on what was then known as RailRoad Avenue which is now the Revere Beach Boulevard. The name Vue DeLeau came about because the hotel, with its attached narrow gauge railroad train station, served fine French cuisine.

The barnlike structure in front of it, at the corner of Shirley and Ocean Avenues, is the Vue DeLeau stables.

This view of Revere harbor is from the third floor of the waterfront Hotel Vue DeLeau looking up Centennial Avenue. The hotel stables are in the foreground and John Cartwright's home can be seen at the crest of the hill over the stables. That would be Shirley Avenue and, beyond it, Dehon Street branching off to the right.
